9-13 Wood Turning - Replace Your Generic Tool Handles with Something Cool!

Nothing sets a woodworker apart like having customized tool handles that speak to your personality!  

Join us for an advanced woodturning experience at the North Little Rock Public Library System’s Innovation Hub. In this full-day, hands-on class, you’ll build on your beginner skills and explore new ways to personalize your turning projects. You’ll leave with two fully finished items—and a lot more confidence at the lathe.

Designed for students who’ve completed at least one woodturning class, this full-day session builds on foundational turning skills.

In this guided workshop, returning students will bring short-handled tools (such as garden tools, kitchen spatulas, or lathe tools) and turn ergonomic wooden handles customized for comfort, balance, and beauty. 

After that, you’ll learn to turn a classic wooden spinning top—an engaging, fast-paced project and a long-time class favorite.

Learning objectives: 

• Reinforce key woodturning techniques using personalized projects
• Learn how to select, shape, and safely turn hardwood for custom handles
• Create ergonomic designs for better grip and balance
• Practice using tools like calipers, chisels, and parting tools
• Apply surface finishing methods for protection and appearance
• Turn a classic spinning top from start to finish
• Work independently with guidance from an experienced mentor
